Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
