In excess of twenty Olympic medal winners, mentors and additional international athletes have endorsed a letter demanding a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing titleholder and coach, who is on death row in the country.

Escalating Global Anger

Amid growing global condemnation over the country's expanding employment of the death penalty as a tool of repression, the forcefully phrased letter denounces the Iranian regime's verdict to uphold the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for being involved in national uprisings in two thousand nineteen and charged of supporting an opposition group. He has passed half a decade in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and kept in seclusion.

“Athletics is designed to encourage optimism, togetherness, and bravery,” the endorsers wrote. “The capital punishment of a winner for his beliefs is a clear violation on these principles and a admonition to any competitor who ventures to speak out.

Pattern of Killing Competitors

The letter noted that the athlete's case was part of a pattern and emphasized the country's history of putting to death competitors for their convictions, such as a national team leader, captain of the soccer squad, and Fourouzan Abdi, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In two thousand twenty, Navid Afkari, a young national wrestling champion, faced the death penalty.

Other signatories to the letter include a yachting pioneer, who captained the inaugural female-only team in a international sailing event and was the first woman to receive a prestigious yachting trophy; the ex- leader of the national squad an athlete; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the 1978 World Cup.

Arrest and Unfair Trial

The boxer was taken into custody in March 2020. The allegations against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and damage of government belongings”. His ruling has been overturned on two occasions but on 4 October it was confirmed on the latest review. His trial was denounced as “highly unjust” by human rights activists and organizations.

Appeal to UN

The appeal to prevent the boxer's capital punishment comes after a 2023 appeal to the United Nations official for freedoms, endorsed by more than 100 advocates and entities, demanding action to avert the sports figure's execution.

Execution Crisis

As per findings, there is an “capital punishment escalation in Iran, which has reached alarming levels”. In 2023, the government sentenced at least 853 people – a 48% rise on the previous year. The year before, statistics showed nearly a thousand capital punishments, marking the maximum count since the year 2015. Over hundreds of people have been executed so far in 2025.

Political prisoners and protesters are victims, notably in the wake of the 2022 uprising. Experts say the Iranian authorities have utilized the death penalty to stifle protest, instil apprehension among the citizenry and strengthen their grip on authority.
