The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
