Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."
