On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
