Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
