Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such medications must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
